The quest for the perfect guitar tone is an endless, deeply personal journey. As guitarists, we obsess over tonewoods, fretboard radii, pickup windings, pedalboard signal chains, and amplifier tubes. Yet, in this relentless pursuit of sonic perfection, the very first point of contact between you and your instrument is often overlooked: the guitar pick.
At Rombopicks, we believe that the plectrum is the translator of your musical intent. It is the bridge between your fingertips and the strings. For years, we have pushed the boundaries of pick design, ergonomics, and material science. Today, we are incredibly proud to announce the next evolution in our lineup—a material designed specifically for players who crave rich, thick, and deeply resonant sounds.
Welcome to the era of Velvet Touch.
RELEASE DATE: AUGUST 29th 2026 - LINK

Engineered for extra mellow, warm, and dark tones, the Velvet Touch material represents a massive leap forward in our manufacturing capabilities. Available in two stunning versions—Deep Black and Lumus (Glow-in-the-Dark)—and expanding across all 12 of our iconic Rombo models, this material is set to redefine how you interact with your guitar.
In this comprehensive guide, we will dive deep into the philosophy behind warm tones, the intense engineering challenges we faced, our uncompromising German quality control, and everything you can expect from the new Velvet Touch experience.
To understand why we created Velvet Touch, we must first understand the anatomy of a guitar’s tone. When a pick strikes a string, it generates a complex waveform consisting of a fundamental frequency and a series of overtones (harmonics). The material, thickness, and bevel of the pick drastically influence which of these frequencies are emphasized and which are muted.

Most modern guitar picks, especially those made from standard Delrin, Nylon, or Ultem, are designed to emphasize the attack—the sharp, percussive "click" of the pick hitting the string. This attack accentuates the high-end treble frequencies, resulting in a "bright" tone. While a bright tone is fantastic for cutting through a dense mix in rock or pop, it isn't always what a song requires.
Many musical contexts demand the exact opposite.
Jazz and Bebop Players: Jazz guitarists have long sought out heavy, dense picks to roll off the high-end "chime" and deliver a thick, round, and fundamental-heavy tone that mimics the human voice.
Neo-Soul and R&B Artists: Modern soul relies on smooth, buttery chord voicings. A sharp pick attack can ruin the laid-back, fluid vibe of the genre.
Acoustic Singer-Songwriters: Some acoustic guitars (especially those with Spruce tops or Taylor-style voicings) can sound overly bright or "ice-picky." A warmer pick acts as a natural physical EQ, taming harsh treble frequencies and bringing out the woody resonance of the instrument.
Studio Musicians: In the recording studio, controlling transient spikes (the sharp attack of the note) is crucial. A pick that naturally produces a mellower attack requires less compression and digital EQ in post-production.
The Velvet Touch material was born out of a desire to serve these musicians. We wanted to create a pick that felt like a warm blanket over your tone—smoothing out the harsh edges, rolling off the aggressive high-end, and letting the deep, resonant mids and lows of your guitar truly sing.

Creating a pick that sounds warm is not inherently difficult. You can simply make a pick out of a very soft material, like felt, soft rubber, or low-density nylon. However, this introduces a massive problem: loss of control and rapid wear.
When you use a soft material to achieve a mellow tone, you sacrifice structural integrity. Soft picks bend easily, which saps the energy out of your picking hand, leading to a loss of speed, dynamic control, and precision. Furthermore, soft materials degrade rapidly. The friction of the steel strings acts like sandpaper, chewing through the bevel of a soft pick in a matter of hours.
This is where our engineering team faced an absolute mountain of a challenge. Our goal was highly specific and incredibly demanding: We needed to combine the legendary qualities of our Original Rombo material—its renowned stiffness, high strength, and exceptional durability—with a dramatically increased sonic "warmth."

We were not willing to compromise on durability. A Rombo pick must last. It must retain its carefully engineered bevels, its micro-nodule grip textures, and its ergonomic shape, even after weeks of heavy playing.
Achieving this required a complete rethinking of polymer blends. We spent months in the R&D phase, testing dozens of different thermoplastic composites. We analyzed how different molecular structures absorbed the kinetic energy of the string impact.
The breakthrough came when we developed a proprietary micro-structure that alters the surface tension and friction coefficient of the material without compromising its core rigidity. The result? Velvet Touch.
When you hold a Velvet Touch pick, it feels robust and unyielding, giving you the stiffness required for articulate alternate picking and complex chord strumming. But the moment it glides off the string, it absorbs the harsh, high-frequency transients. You get the mechanical control of a stiff pick, but the sonic profile of a beautifully soft, vintage material. It is, quite literally, the best of both worlds.

Because tone is only one part of the guitarist's experience, we wanted to ensure the Velvet Touch material looked and felt as unique as it sounds. We are launching this revolutionary material in two distinct, highly requested versions.
There is something undeniably sleek, professional, and timeless about a purely black guitar pick. But we didn’t just want standard black; we wanted to push the aesthetic boundaries.
The "Deep Black" Velvet Touch picks are engineered to absorb light just as beautifully as they absorb high-end audio frequencies. Utilizing a specialized pigment infusion process during the molding phase, we have created what we confidently believe are the darkest guitar picks on the market.
They feature a stunning, ultra-polish finish that looks like a void resting between your fingers. This texture isn't just for show—it works in tandem with our signature grip structures to provide an incredibly secure hold, even when your hands are sweating under hot stage lights. Deep Black is the ultimate choice for the player who wants their gear to look as stealthy, understated, and sophisticated as their playing.

If Deep Black is about stealth, Lumus is about pure stage presence and undeniable practicality.
Live performers know the panic of dropping a pick on a pitch-black stage mid-song. With the Lumus version of the Velvet Touch material, that anxiety is a thing of the past. Lumus is our highly anticipated glow-in-the-dark variant.
However, integrating photoluminescent (glow-in-the-dark) powders into a polymer usually compromises the structural integrity and the tonal qualities of the plastic. This was yet another engineering hurdle. We had to find a way to saturate the Velvet Touch material with enough high-grade luminescent pigment to ensure a bright, long-lasting glow, without altering the carefully balanced "warm" tonal properties we had just perfected.
After extensive refinement, we achieved a perfect balance. The Lumus picks charge quickly under natural or artificial light (a few minutes under a desk lamp or a stage spotlight is all it takes) and emit a vibrant, radiant glow that lasts for hours. Not only do they look incredibly cool sweeping across the strings in a dark venue, but they are also instantly retrievable if dropped.

We know that every guitarist's hands are different, which is why we never take a "one size fits all" approach to our designs.
Whether you are a shredder who loves the sharp precision of the Rombo Jade, an acoustic strummer who relies on the flexible balance of the Rombo Classic, or an experimental player who loves the unique grip geometry of the Rombo Origami, you will not be left out.

The Velvet Touch material—in both Deep Black and Lumus—is available across all 12 Rombo Guitar Pick models.
This means you can maintain your exact preferred shape, thickness, and ergonomic grip, while instantly swapping out your tonal palette.
Want to play a fast, articulate jazz solo with zero pick noise? Grab a Velvet Touch Horizon.
Need to strum a bright, chiming acoustic without sounding harsh? Switch to a Velvet Touch Dune.
Looking for massive, thick, chugging metal riffs with rolled-off highs? The Velvet Touch Erebus or Diamond are your weapon of choice.
By offering this material across the entire range, we are giving you a customizable EQ pedal that fits right in your pocket.
When we launched our highly successful Crystal Bright material, we set a new, incredibly high benchmark for our own quality control. The clarity and precision of that material demanded absolute perfection in manufacturing.
We knew that Velvet Touch, despite its different tonal goals, had to meet that exact same standard of luxury and precision.

Mass-produced guitar picks are typically punched out of sheets of plastic or injection-molded by the millions, leaving sharp seams, rough edges (flashing), and inconsistent bevels. These imperfections catch on the strings, causing unwanted scraping noises and inconsistent attack.
At Rombopicks, we refuse to let a sub-par product reach your hands. Every single Velvet Touch pick undergoes strict quality control and finishing in Germany. The bevels (the edges of the pick that actually strike the string) must be perfectly smooth. After the precision injection molding process, the Velvet Touch picks are subjected to a rigorous finishing routine.
We decided to keep the hand-polished and manual inspection work strictly in Germany, mirroring the premium treatment we give to our Crystal Bright line. Our technicians manually inspect each pick for microscopic flaws. The picking edges are then meticulously tumbled and hand-polished to remove any trace of a molding seam. This smooth, glassy edge is critical—it ensures that the pick glides over the string with zero friction, allowing the mellow, dark characteristics of the Velvet Touch material to shine through without any distracting mechanical "scratch" noises.

When you purchase a Velvet Touch pick, you are buying a piece of high-precision German engineering, refined by human hands.
At Rombo, we view our customers not just as consumers, but as a community of artists. When you invest in our tools, we want the experience of receiving them to be as inspiring as playing them.

The launch of the Velvet Touch material is a milestone for Rombopicks. We set out to solve a complex engineering puzzle: providing guitarists with a genuinely warm, dark, and mellow tone without sacrificing the stiffness, strength, and durability required for serious playing.
Through relentless R&D, rigorous German quality control, and a deep understanding of what musicians truly need, we have achieved that goal. Whether you choose the stealthy, ultra-matte aesthetic of Deep Black or the highly practical, stage-ready glow of Lumus, the Velvet Touch material will transform your relationship with your instrument.
It is time to tame your high-end, thicken your mids, and discover a smoother, more articulate way to play. The Velvet Touch is here. All 12 models are waiting for you.

To help you understand exactly how the Velvet Touch material fits into your playing style, we’ve compiled answers to the most common questions from our community.
The Velvet Touch material is engineered with a specific polymer that naturally absorbs the high-frequency kinetic energy (the "click" or "snap") when striking the string. Unlike standard Delrin or Nylon picks that emphasize treble, Velvet Touch rolls off the high-end transients, allowing the fundamental low and mid-frequencies of your guitar to become more prominent, resulting in a dark, warm, and smooth tone.
This was our main engineering challenge! Traditional soft picks wear out fast. However, Velvet Touch is a proprietary blend designed to maintain the stiffness, high strength, and extreme durability of our Original Rombo material. You get the sonic warmth of a soft pick with the physical lifespan and rigidity of a hard premium pick.
Both versions feature the exact same Velvet Touch material, tonal profile, and grip textures. The difference is purely aesthetic and functional:
Deep Black features a specialized pigment making it the darkest, most ultra-polished pick on the market, perfect for a sleek, stealthy look.
Lumus includes a high-grade photoluminescent pigment that allows the pick to glow brightly in the dark after being exposed to light, making it ideal for live performances on dark stages.
We are thrilled to offer Velvet Touch across our entire catalog! All 12 Rombo Guitar Pick models (including the Classic, Origami, Diamond, Jade, Dune, and more) are available in both Deep Black and Lumus finishes.
We believe in uncompromising quality. Just like our Crystal Bright series, we keep the finishing, hand-polishing, and manual inspection processes in Germany. Hand-polishing removes any microscopic molding seams from the bevels, ensuring a frictionless glide across the strings, which is crucial for maintaining a clean, warm tone without scratchy pick noise.
Absolutely. Many acoustic guitars (especially those with fresh bronze strings) can sound overly bright or harsh. Using a Velvet Touch pick acts as a natural EQ, taming the harsh treble frequencies and bringing out the warm, woody resonance of the acoustic body. It is highly recommended for acoustic strumming and singer-songwriters.
We’ve upgraded our unboxing experience! Every set includes your chosen picks, a detailed material flyer/brochure, and a premium thank you card featuring the printed signatures of the founders. Additionally, the card includes a digital download link for our exclusive "Guitar Pick Quick Guide" to help you master your right-hand technique.
After being fully charged under a strong light source (like a desk lamp, direct sunlight, or stage lighting) for just a few minutes, the Lumus guitar pick will emit a strong, visible glow for hours. The intensity will gradually fade, but it remains visible enough to easily locate on a dark stage or in a dim studio environment.
